Umajesty Means Obituary

Umajesty Joshua Means; known to all as Magik, entered this world cool and smooth on June 13 1993. He was the only child and bright and shining star to his Beloved mother, Diane K. McElveen and his proud father, Danny Means.

Magik didn’t cry, didn’t peep, he was actually born while asleep! The doctor swatted him once, Magik looked-up at him rolled his eyes and turned his head, thus this was the beginning of his journey in this world and “angst” with authority.

Umajesty was born in Queens, New York and lived in south side. He followed his father around and emulated him to a “T”. This included a toy beeper, a toy phone, and a book bag of snacks as the two of them roamed the city.

Being an only child, he clung to his paternal cousins; a host of girls, who loved him; spoiled him; and took care of him like he was their baby doll.

Brittany; who is his sister/cousin and first love, taught him to stand up for himself and his family. The other girls Lenise, Ashley, Diavonni, and finally a new baby, Alexus “Lexie”- thereby making him no longer the youngest anymore.

Don’t forget his paternal aunt; Tangeray Means, who bought him his first video game system because I refused to!

Umajesty was loved and adored by grand aunts who doted on him too. There is Diane Saxon Cummings, Larry Cummings; Annette Saxon (Aunty Netty, who was his real other mother who catered to his love of fried chicken!) Theresa Timmons, Shirley Means, and his late Grandmother Brenda Means.

Grand uncles who taught him to stand up and be right the late Marshall Means, Alexander Saxon, George Saxon, the Late Ronnie Saxon and Mark Saxon. Great Grandparents Annie Loretta Saxon and Marshall Saxon that contributed to the love and rearing of Umajesty.

When Umajesty was happy, that smile would light up the room. That smile was definitely powered by  all of the love he received from his maternal grandmother, the late Deborah Berry known to all as “Sweetie”.  The grand aunts/uncles:  Aunt Renee Berry , Aunt Doreen (Dee) Berry, Uncle Benjamin Berry and the late Uncle (Barry) Malachi Berry.

Umajesty’s aunt; the late Datsheta McElveen, was her one and only nephew, and she let everyone know when she carried him through all of Jamaica Queens. His sister/cousin; Taznique, who couldn’t say his name when she was small was the only person allowed by him to shorten his name to ma-ma. He was her bigger brother and he protected her to the very end.

Umajesty’s youngest cousin Jermaine looked up to him more like an uncle. His older cousins Raheen Berry, Ramel Berry and younger cousin Ebony Wilson. There were oh so many more that they all can’t be listed. However, he would haunt me if in his life story a special love shout-out didn’t go to his God mother Yolanda Wilson whom he loved and cherished and God Sister Tatyana Clancy even though she was older, he thought of her as the baby.

As Umajesty grew up, we moved from South Side Queens to St. Albans were Magik met friends that became family for life. They were Dupree, Rashaun, Latonya, Danielle, and the young one Xavier. TT, Aunty Adia, and “Mean Man" out the window old man James.

Finally, a new move and a new beginning in the state of Florida. The little boy Umajesty became to be known as the young man, “Magik” (football coach gave him that name).

Marion Oaks was his first home in Florida, and there he acquired many friends from there (Oaks Bound). Marion Oaks is where he met his brother from another mother Nasir Smith (Macho) and nothing could tear them apart… neither time nor space nor circumstance.

Out of Marion Oaks the City of Ocala becomes his playground. His 9th Ave Boys Ce-Lo and Ian and there are so many more. We can not forget his life style ‘til the end - all his blood brothers. Soo Woop!!  And we can’t forget all of those from 1148 street.

Umajesty’s proudest and greatest events in his life, if he would say it, is the birth of his children Jowell Means (Jennalise Jusino), Jordyn Thomas-Means (Kimberly Thomas), and Zari’Anna Means (Hannah Antis). To each and everyone, Your dad loved you from here to eternity. He is in your heart; he is in your blood; and you are a part of him; and he is a part of you!

Umajesty Joshua Means closed his eyes on that early morning April 29th 2025 never to open them again. Magik a Life unfinished but not undone!

“Fly High My Boy, Fly High”. No more pain! Soo Woop!
