Ezekiel Chisholm, Jr. Obituary

“May the Work I’ve Done Speak for Me”

February 2, 1958 – December 12, 2023

Ezekiel Edward Chisholm Jr. was born on February 2, 1958, in Ocala, Florida to the late Rev. Ezekiel Edward Chisholm Sr. and Mrs. Fannie Chisholm.  Ezekiel, affectionately known as Zeke or Jr. was the third oldest of six children born of this union.  Zeke was a graduate of Forest High School Class of 1976.  He graduated from Central Florida Community College with an Associate of Arts degree and Florida State University wherein he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Not only a scholar, but Zeke’s passion for music also shone brightly as he assumed the roles of President and Director of the esteemed Florida State Gospel Choir during his time at the university.

From a young age, Mr. Chisholm was instilled with a deep appreciation for education and teaching. Embracing this calling, he devoted himself to the noble path of an elementary school educator. Over his remarkable 30-year career within Marion County Public Schools, Mr. Chisholm shared his knowledge and guidance at various schools including Stanton-Weirsdale Elementary, Dunnellon Elementary, Ocala Springs Elementary, Harbour View Elementary, and Fessenden Elementary. While shaping young minds in the classroom, Mr. Chisholm extended his talents beyond teaching, serving as a Choir Director. His passion for music ignited a desire to teach students not only melodies but also the art of harmonizing their voices. Recognized for his exceptional dedication, he was twice honored as his school's Teacher of the Year.  Mr. Chisholm's teaching style reflected a blend of tough love and unwavering determination. His no-nonsense approach inspired even the most reluctant students to strive for excellence, leaving no room for failure in his classroom. A fatherly figure to many, he functioned as a mentor and motivator, nurturing not only academic growth but also attending to the emotional and social needs of his students. His commitment to education was his passion, and his students' success was his heart's greatest fulfillment.

Zeke’s spiritual journey commenced at a young age when he was baptized at Saint Paul M.B.C., where his father and pastor, Rev. E.E. Chisholm Sr., guided his early steps in faith. Zeke’s powerful voice and heart-felt prayers began during his adolescent years through his active participation in oratorical speaking competitions within the Second Bethlehem Baptist Association, leading him to represent the Association at the State Baptist Convention wherein he won several awards in oratorical speaking. His compelling and powerful voice always echoed praises to the Lord, captivating all who heard him.  Within the halls of St. Paul M.B.C., Zeke extended his devotion by sharing his wisdom as a Sunday School Teacher for both adults and children, alongside directing the choir. He later transferred his membership to New Chapel M.B.C. under the leadership of Rev. Izell James Sr. There, his commitment to spiritual service continued as he contributed to the Men’s Ministry through Sunday School teachings and singing in the Mass Choir and Male Chorus.

Zeke had a range of talents, from singing and speechwriting to landscaping, refurbishing wood, laying tile, renovating houses, and cooking signature dishes like his famous oxtail soup. He enjoyed farm life with cows, indulging in early morning fishing trips, playing the keyboard, and watching football (especially his beloved Florida State Seminoles). During his teaching days, he found solace in early morning jogs, regularly embarking on a brisk five-mile run around Ocala before starting his day’s preparations.  Zeke also had a passion for collecting antique cars, notably his Award-Winning Studebaker, and was an active member of the North Central Florida Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club.

Zeke’s diverse hat collection was also a hallmark of his style.  Among the many hats he wore so well, one however always stood out- he was a cheerful giver, always finding immense joy in quietly bestowing kindness to others without expecting anything in return.  One thing Zeke was always serious about is living out his love for God in how he treated people and his lifelong commitment and responsibility to helping build the Kingdom of God.  This devotion echoed not only in his prayers but in the sermon of his everyday life- a testament to his unwavering stride to hear the Savior say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant, for your labor was not in vain.”  For this reason, if anyone should ever write his life-story, he would unhesitatingly say, “Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to me!”
